Relax: It’s only wrinkles
Purified botulinum toxin Type A, aka Botox and FDA approved Dysport, simply prevent the muscles from contracting. The correctly administered shots will smooth out the furrows between the eyes, and other forehead lines. It’s used to soften crows feet, the chords in the neck. It can reduce excessive chin dimpling and provide light life to the corners of the eyes and mouth. In skilled hands the effect is lovely and lasts between 3 to 6 months.
Fill’er Up — Volume Is The Key
There are several injectible temporary volumizers available. They behave in slightly different ways and their properties make them better suited for one aspect of the face rather than another.
Hyaluronic Acid (injectible temporary fillers) is a gel matrix that naturally surrounds all the cells in the body. This group of hydrophilic (water-attactng) subdermal fillers are placed just beneath the dermis (too shallow and there’s a risk of discoloration) and gently massaged into into shape. Restylane, Perlane, Juvaderm are wonderful for giving subtle life and to iron out lines. The difference between brands lies in the hylauronic molecule size with Restylane having what Dr. Rademaker feels are the best fluid properties. Having the 99.9% pure hyaluronic, they are great for gently filling out marionette lines, nasolabial folds, tear trough and adding fullness to lips. They are not recommended for creases between eyebrows. For that, rely on Dysport of Botox. Generally Dr. Rademaker prefers the volumizing capabilities of Radiesse (see below) except for the lips.
Hydroxy Appatite: The Hunger for Radiesse
This coral-based paste-like substance can almost create a bone matrix to reconstruct bone and we harness its properties to stimulate collagen production and volume. Unlike the hyaluronic acid, hydroxy apatite has to be placed very deep. It’s best used for plumping hollow cheeks, temples, the supraobital area, firming up the jaw and chin.
